Andreia Albuquerque received formal training in research as part of the Harvard Medical School–Portugal Program in Translational Research.
From 2014 to 2017, while she was working as a Gastroenterologist at the Gastroenterology Department of Centro Hospitalar S. João, Porto, Portugal, she started her PhD on anal squamous intraepithelial lesions focusing on biomarkers and epidemiology.
She worked as a researcher and Honorary Consultant at the Homerton Anal Neoplasia Service, Homerton University Hospital in London (2017-2018). She also worked as a Senior Fellow in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (2018-2019), and then, as a Locum IBD Consultant Gastroenterologist (2021-2022) at St. James University Hospital in Leeds, the largest University Hospital in Europe.
In 2019, she completed her PhD at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. Since then she continued to be active on research on early detection and anal cancer prevention, with several international collaborations.
Currently, she has a total of 83 papers published in peer-review journals, with 57 publications as first author. She has published 23 papers as first author on anal precancerous lesions, in journals as The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Clinical Infectious Diseases, British Journal of Cancer and the International Journal of Cancer. She was a member of the 2021 European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization Guidelines on the Management and Prevention of Opportunistic Infections and was part of the International Continence Society Committee on male anorectal dysfunction terminology.
She is an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Medical Research, an Editorial Board Member of BMC Gastroenterology and an Editorial Board Member of the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology.
She often participates in international meetings as an invited speaker on the topic of early detection and anal cancer prevention. She was a Faculty member of UEG 2023 and a member of the IPVC 2023, 2024 and 2025 Organizing Scientific Committee. She has co-chair several sessions in both Meetings. She has organize two online webinars for IPVS in 2023 (How to use social media to promote your career) and in 2024 (Anal cancer prevention: an update). She was the chair and organizer of the first edition of the IPVS Human Papillomavirus Related Anogenital Diseases Course for Clinicians (IPVS PACC) and the IPVC 2024 High-resolution Anoscopy Workshop.
She has served as a Board Member of the International Anal Neoplasia Society (IANS) and was a co-chair of the IANS Spanish-Portuguese Task Force. She is currently a Board Member of the International Papillomavirus Society (IPVS), the chair of the IPVS Social Media Committee and a member of the IPVS Education Committee.
She is an Associate Professor of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University Fernando Pessoa.
